Meiske venture forthe6/27/2023 ![]() I had to give presentations - a lot of them. ‘’I actually became way more outgoing because I had to interact with a lot of people. Studying Life Sciences helped Cristina become the person she’d always wanted to be. ''Throughout my studies, I became a version of myself that I like much better'' That’s what I find the most fascinating, that we find out how things work right in front of us.'' And you get to see what you do has an impact. On learning to work with different equipment. ‘’The whole study program is based on lab work. This helped me approach her, and ultimately, make a new friend – and through it, land an internship that I feel really passionate about!’’Ĭristina finds the practical work the most interesting part of her study program. But since we changed classes many times during the past two years, I felt way more comfortable about approaching people. To be fair, the Dutch students do tend to stick around each other more. HAN really provides you with tons of opportunities to build a network of your own. ![]() And then the social skills I've gained over the years of my study really helped me to approach her in the first place. So I think to some extent, that helped me. She told the people at Byondis that I’d make a great fit for their internship. She’d already done her internship at Byondis. ‘’I have a Dutch friend who is also in Life Sciences. Landing an internship through her networkĬristina mentions that she landed the internship partly thanks to her network at HAN. So I’m super happy that I got accepted there as well!’’ ![]() They have tons of experience and love doing what they’re doing. And the people at Byondis are very passionate. Since I really like my research, I also like what the company has to offer. They also have the patent, the legal rights on one of the medicines, which is used to treat cancer. It has about 400 employees, and it's very good at creating this unique drug antibody conjugate. How cool’s that?’’Ĭristina is doing her internship at Byondis, a pharmaceutical company in Nijmegen. It’s a new therapy that's been invented in recent years, and I'm going to do research about it. You can make this drug specifically target the tumor and nothing else. In my upcoming internship, I will focus on ADCs (antibody-drug conjugates) – a targeted therapy for treating cancer. I wrote an essay in which I made a visual representation of the life stages of the malaria parasite. ‘’My first internship was focused on malaria research. Being exposed to different kinds of research in the first and second year helps you discover what you truly want to do.’’ Slowly but surely, you can really tailor the Life Sciences program to exactly fit your interests and passions. There are 3 specializations you can choose from: to work with humans, plants, or bacteria. In the third year, you choose your specialization. So, you have many biology and chemistry classes, and as you progress, you also learn about plant biology. In the program, you learn about how human cells work. ‘’The Life Sciences program really makes you feel like you're doing research. Luckily, Life Sciences at HAN turned out to be the perfect match for her. Tailoring the program to fit her interests I wanted to work with people and really sense the difference my research makes. Mathematics and physics didn’t excite me. But the theoretical approach didn’t fit me. So it’s really all about personal preferences – are you more into theory or more into practice? I initially chose a research university because it was just 3 years versus 4 years of study at a university of applied sciences. ‘’It’s not that one program is better than the other. She made the switch to HAN the next year. Before Cristina studied Life Sciences at HAN, she'd studied Molecular Life Sciences at Radboud University.
